I now have evolved to looking at wood with an artistic perspective and I have found most pleasure when I can utilize the characteristics with an art form. Many art forms are tables and other functional pieces that were at one time very strange to me. These pieces now offer an opportunity to combine either a piece of art in the form of a painting or a unique combination of different wood spiecies or colour. Although some unique commission pieces may hold an interest I am turning more to being guided by the wood, trying to figure out how to capture and present the attributes of the boards that pass through my planer. Only by removing the weathered covering of time darkened edges does the beauty of the wood appear. At that time the potential forms appear as to what this board may ultimately become.  |
